Abstract

Abstract

The term “trench” appeared in the Mesopotamian cuneiform texts since early Period, specifically since the third dynasties and continued until the New and late Babylonian Period. By studying the trench in the cuneiform sources, it becomes clear to us that the trenches vary into defensive, irrigated and borderline ones, and they can be considered as architectural structures that played an important defensive and irrigating role and played a key role in delivering water from the main canal to the agricultural fields, thus sustaining agriculture and achieving food security, as is the case in the beliefs of the country. Mesopotamia, the trenches were associated with the residents’ religious beliefs, and several protective deities were assigned to them.
